Angel Benitez Jr. Sweeps the Field in his JDX / Hertz Racing Season Debut at The Glen

LOVELAND, Colo. (June 29th, 2015) – The season debut of their newly signed Porsche Pilot Angel Benitez Jr. for the JDX Racing / Hertz Porsche could not have been better. Benitez lead every lap of both races to soundly sweep the field in rounds five and six of the Porsche GT3 Challenge USA by Yokohama at Watkins Glen International Raceway this weekend.

Having signed the young Venezuelan just a week earlier, JDX Racing and Angel had a steep learning curve as they arrived at Watkins Glen International on Wednesday. Team and driver took full advantage of both practice sessions on Thursday, posting the fastest time in practice one, and just a tick off fastest time in practice two. Angel, with the help of race engineer Luke Goldenstein, zeroed in on a solid setup for Friday’s qualifying session, claiming front row starting positions for the No.05 JDX Racing / Hertz Porsche in both races.

In Angel’s return to the series, he put his stamp on the weekend at turn one / lap one, with a very aggressive and perfectly executed outside pass on the pole sitter. Angel went on to lead every lap of the race, checking out with two other cars in the field. The statement had been made – Angel and JDX will be a tough combination to beat in 2015!

The second race of the weekend on Saturday morning would prove to be its own challenge, as rain began to fall 20 minutes prior the green flag. Unfazed – and with the JDX crew applying the correct chassis setup adjustments required for wet weather conditions – Angel again started on the outside of the front row, and was even more assertive than the previous day. Heading into turn one Angel held his line around the outside of the banked turn one, clearing the No.14 car of Elliott Skeer with another brilliant outside pass. Skeer – desperately trying to stay with Benitez – lost the back end of his Porsche Cup car, causing multiple cars to spin. Regardless of the wet track conditions, Angel checked out and lead the field of 26 cars on the the historic 3.47 mile, 11-turn Watkins Glen International Raceway to the checkered flag.

Benitez Jr. commented, “This was the most fun I have had in a race car, hands down. I had a smile on my face from ear to ear, I love The Glen, I love driving in the rain, I didn’t want to get out of the car. Luke, JDX Racing and Hertz gave me a car that was fast and planted – the car rolled off the truck fast, I lead the field in the first practice and we tried some different things in the second session on Thursday. I am a little disappointed I wasn’t able to take the pole for our Hertz guests this weekend, but I made up for it in the first race with a pass in turn one right at the start of the race, and lead the field to the checked flag. It was a great weekend for the entire team and I look forward to Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in two weeks – it’s one of my favorite tracks!”

Team principal Harrison Brix said, “Angel did exactly what we knew he would do, win races. Not only did he win both rounds this weekend, he led every lap, and that’s the message we wanted to send to the rest of the field. This was Angel’s first time back in a Cup Car since Atlanta last fall, but believe it or not, we still have plenty of work to do. We’re confident we’ll continue to find pace in the car and driver, and we are very much looking forward to carrying this momentum going to Toronto in two weeks.”

The green flag for rounds 7 and 8 of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama are scheduled July 9-12 at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in Bowmanville, Ontario. Both races are timed, 45-minute events that support the Tudor United SportsCar Championship Mobil 1 Sportscar Grand Prix Presented by Hawk Performance race on Sunday, July 12.
