Angel Benitez Jr. and JDX Racing Scorch the Field at Circuit of the Americas

LOVELAND, Colo. (Sept 20th, 2015) – Angel Benitez Jr. and the JDX Racing / Hertz Porsche returned to action following his third win of the season at Virginia International Raceway, in Alton, Virginia just three weeks ago. The Venezuelan born sports car racer racked up his fourth and fifth race wins of the season in the black and gold liveried #05 JDX Racing / Hertz Porsche on the 3.427 mile, 20 turn Circuit of the Americas in Austin,Texas.

Following his VIR win, Benitez Jr. looked to carry momentum and to continue pressuring the Platinum Class points leaders in the GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama USA. The weekend started in customary GT3 Cup fashion, with two practice sessions, as the 26 year old JDX Racing pilot managed to take the #05 Hertz Racing Porsche to the top of the timing charts, leading into Friday’s qualifying session.

Benitez Jr. qualified the #05 JDX Racing / Hertz Porsche car third for the first race of the weekend featuring 26 Porsche GT3 Cup cars. The entire field rumbled up the menacing 133 foot climb to a turn one apex located at the crest of the hill. The #14 Porsche driven by Elliott Skeer and pole sitter Jesse Lazare in the #21 car left the door open for Benitez Jr. as he used all of the track on the inside and lead the field into turn one. The pass surprised many, including Angel, as he then proceeded to lead every lap, claiming the checkered flag for his fourth race win of the season, 3.627 seconds ahead of the second place finisher and series points leader, Elliott Skeer.

The second race of the weekend found the series veteran again starting third in the field, following only Lazere and Skeer to the green flag. Unlike the first race, both drivers ahead of Benitez Jr. protected the inside, running a very tight line on the entry to turn one. Angel pounced quickly and wheeled the #05 JDX Racing / Hertz Porsche wide to the outside, squaring off the corner and claiming the race lead as he cleared turn two. An incident on lap two created a short full course yellow, but Angel led the field for the restart and got a great jump heading down the front straight to continue his lead. He paced the field stretching out a advantage of nearly three seconds before a brief second full course yellow brought the field back together. In true Benitez fashion, he executed the restart to perfection. Under the lights at COTA, Angel set a new race lap record of 2.13.801, leading to the checked flag for his second race win of the weekend, third in as many races and fifth of the season.

DSC09708.JPGBenitez Jr. commented, ”I’m really happy for JDX and Hertz, I’m thankful for the opportunity they have given me and what better way to thank them – two race wins. I really had fun out there this weekend and I’m sure everyone was surprised with the start – they left an opening and I took it – not once, but twice. Both times I got through turn one cleanly and just kept looking forward. The Austin heat took it’s toll, but Luke (Goldenstein, Race Engineer) gave me a great car all weekend.”

Team principal Harrison Brix said, “The guys did another great job this week. We had the speed, running in the top of the field for the majority of the weekend, and being rewarded with our fourth and fifth wins of the season. Angel has done everything we have asked of him and his results speak for themselves. Now we head west for our season finale, Rennsport Renuion V at Laguna next weekend. We are confident Angel will continue putting pressure on the points leaders as he has done since he joined JDX Racing earlier this season.”

The green flag for the series finale, rounds 15 and 16 of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama are scheduled September 25-27 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Monterey, California. The green flag for round 15 flies Saturday, September 26 at 5:25pm EST, round 16 Sunday, September 27 at 2:30pm EST.
